running rich

hi all i done a service yesturday and found the old plugs were extremly black / the car always smells of petrol i had an idle problem when i first got the car fixed that but cant work out how to sort this prob any advice would be appreciated

ok, have you ever had the co checked out?  one thing thats free to try is to unplug the 5th inj, possibly its sticking open and overfuelling

ideally you want to get a proper k-jet fuel pressure gauge on it, then you can see exactly what is going on in the metering head.  The WUR is responsible for setting the fuel pressure and hence the mixture while its warming up, but without a pressure gauge you cant really see what it is up to.  Has the car suffered from rust in the fuel system due to a rusty filler neck in the past?

would this be something a home tune company could sort for me or would it be easy to do myself/ive only had the car a few months .the filler neck looks ok with no rust

dpends on how good the tuner is, a VAG specialist should presumably have the kit.  The gauges can be bought reasonably cheap, theres a group buy over on cgti:
