seems to be a sudden influx of foreigners in this post

Because it's mildly amusing. I drive cars which have been replaced many times over so I'm fully aware the newer ones are superior in nearly every way. I'm not bothered though because I've paid 20 times less than they cost new.

I do sympathise to an extent though. I got my DSLR in Jan and it's been replaced by TWO new models in that time!

Except in the case of the VW Golf.
The MK1 and Mk2 GTI's were excellent cars (and they lasted longer than my Alfasud) but the MK3 and Mk4 were dismal in the extreme.
I never wanted one.
I did want a Mk5 GTI.
I don't want a Mk6.
History repeating?

....

A quote from when the Mk5 was first introduced : -

"While the Mk4 looked dull, the Mk5 GTi looks smart. While the Mk4 looked undistinguishable from the regular Golf, the Mk5 GTi looks noticeably different. Its big radiator grille - the first appearance of the new Volkswagen corporate grille - is blackened and decorated with red lining to deliver a more aggressive appearance. The big intakes at either side of the front bumper amplifies that sporty feel, though they are pseudo, actually a black plastic decoration. A 15 mm lower ride height is detectable by eyes. The deeper lip spoiler, side skirts and additional tailgate spoiler are even more apparent. But most important of all, no other Golfs ride on 17-inch alloy wheels with 225-width tires. Neither do they have twin exhaust pipes. See through the wheels, you will discover eye-catching red calipers clamping larger brake discs. From the appearance, the new GTi is already promising."

It goes on and on but you get the story?

I'd like to see someone in the USA rip the guts out of VW by getting a class action together and using their quotes as supportfor getting any problems fixed. By stating that they are aware of problems (not just in the detailed construction) then I wonder how safe they are rubbishing a car that is still out and in many cases under warranty!

I willkeep this link and if I ever do have an issue with my GTI will take it with me to the service department when they start harping about how they have never heard of the problem before..fuel for the fire!

The question is - are you still happy with it?

I am happy with my mk5 still and happy with the mk4 Anniversary for that matter.

but nothing about interior quality improvements, I bet
They knew it then already, that interior quality is crappy

When I got E30 it was fine, but after a year of driving it rattles all over, I have holes in the black floor cover (they cut some kind of holes there for some reason). Quality is the ONLY letdown in Mk5 (ok, I do not mention the quality of plastic, it is pretty crappy as well).
And you know why I whine so much about the interior quality? Because I really love E30!
