Cars have feelings too
« on: 22 September 2008, 13:08 »

well my GTI has,  cos it knows I have been working on another Golf

so today the thermostat decided to not work, causing a reet load of back pressure which has blown the heater matrix

so after a scary tow home off the AA on a rigid bar, its been dumped in the garage, and the green machine has hit the streets.

So do i bite the bullet and change the stat and martrix just for the rolling road day, or cut my losses and pull her off the road now ????

Of course they have feelings.....mine has allways started 100% but last week I looked at a few others to replace it and she decided not to start due to battery issues! Even with a fully charged battery it wouldn't go until yestoday and i havent done anything else to it! (that was the day I decided to keep it and not look at another till laters!)
Its got a mind!! and is good at playing tricks!!    Yours will be the same and is craving your attention!

Do rolling roads measure power that low?
Mr. Chuff, please keep your GTI. Stat takes about 20 leisurely minutes to change but as you probably know the matrix will take longer. Seems like youre just getting a bit bored of it. Up the power and you wont!

Bummer mate. Look on the bright side - At least you've got the CL otherwise you'd be in more of a mess.

Did it give you any sign of something being wrong before it blew, e.g. did it overheat?

heater matrix burns your legs/feet well good eh.

just bypass the heater matrix connecting the two pipes into the bulkhead together in a loop. not ideal but a decent temp fix.

well, as I have PAS, the stat aint a 20 minute job, its 35 minutes, but as I was taking it apart i have drained the PAS to change the fluid.

I also pulled the alternator off as the connections needed a good clean, - and its mounting bracket as it needed a lick of paint.

and then the SO CALLED HORRIBLE job.

1, throw away the haynes book of lies - it misses out some keys parts

2, go for it, remembering people saying about the top clips.

3, take 65 minutes to remove the offending item.

So, all i gotta do now is order the bits and then rebuild it.

Conker - Water  light was flashing - temperature was all ok.  I got stuck in traffic, stuck the heater on full and whoosh, car steamed up and footwell got all warm and damp.

Only when i investigated did I notice that the bottom hose was cold - thus the stat is stuck shut and the back pressure was too much for the Matrix. ( so says the nice AA man )

So, where do you al get ya matrixs from, have I seen somewhere that you should use a MK3 one ?????

+1

this got me out of trouble a while ago... although if i were you i'd do it know in time for winter!

you will have to change the 'stat anyway.

cars and feelings... yes... without the golf's clutch failing, i wouldnt have got a decent job!

I don't think a semi will give the same results
