Gearbox Advice
« on: 12 May 2004, 18:35 »
As you may be aware I am on the look-out for a 2nd hand gearbox for my 91 8v GTi. Do i need to get a gearbox from a similar aged/model of car or will any 5-spd box fitted to any mk2 golf suffice?

Your help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as ever folks :)

Thanks

David

You're not just limited to mk2 gearboxes. You can use mk1 Golf, Scirocco, Jetta and even Austin Maestro :o

One difference that you do want to look out for is the reversing light connector.......these can be different. You may also need to swap the drive shaft flanges over.

The ratio's can also be a little different depending on what car it came from. I expect the code for your box is: 020 AUG
Have a look at this table so that you can get an idea of the differences:-

Try this... http://www.findit.co.uk/cars/volkswagen/parts.htm

I always thought the 16v box on an 8v would mean a higher top end ???

Got my car back yesterday, complete with new (2nd hand) gearbox. I hope one of you can help me. The car now seems mega un-responsive with this gearbox compared to the old one. This is especially apparent from 3rd gear upwards where you would think i was barely touching the accelerator at times. This has effectively made my GTi a non-gti in terms of performance which has p****d me off no end!!!. Anything that can be done?......also which gearbox do you think i have been supplied with......i can't believe it came from another GTi!!!

Thanks folks :'(

Sorry to hear that, what code is it?
Looking suspiciously like it may be one from a diesel :(

Can you give me a clue where to look on the gearbox to find the code? I am ringing the guy who supplied and fitted it tomorrow

Thanks

if you want to swap a 16v box onto an 8v or vice versa then you need the correct clutch as 16v boxes have a lager input shaft than 8v boxes.

8v & 16v box are more or less the same except the 8v has a longer 5th gear

co-incidentally - i found out only last week that my 16v is running a maestro box, my initial thought was :o :o

but then after studying the ratios against those on a 16v. i found the maestro box to be more or less even thru 1st - 3rd. but 4th & 5th are longer meaning better for motorway driving

this site http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ is good for comparing gearboxes & ratio's

your gearbox code is stamped on the bottom of the bellhousing - there will be a code & a date

seen as the yellow square in this pic
