MOT and more!
« on: 12 May 2004, 10:27 »
Had my first MOT on my Golf on Friday....

It failed on the n/s rear wheel bearing, which cost me ?4 and 10 mins to fix!!

The interesting bit was the emissions test... 660ppm for CO. Which basically means that loads of air is getting into the system some how (not a MOT failure by the way).

So i though it must be a Vacum leak (i know it was igintion related as that had been sorted before). After checking all the hoses no leaks.....  ???

So i thought id adjust the CO mixture on the Air flow meter.... Went to adjust the screw and guess what... it wasnt there!!!!

I think this may explain the emission result! without the screw im getting maximum air intake!!

Question is where do i get one of these screws!!!

How did you change your wheel bearing in 10 mins for 4 quid?

CO is measured as a percentage
HC is measured ppm

I thought HC is down to unburnt fuel?

High HC can also be down to oil consumption.

I'm interested in how he did the whell bearing for that, in that time! i got quoted ?50 wherever i went (for each side) Eventually got it for ?50 for both sides, but it still took an hour at least...

just checked the emission test and it was

670ppm for HC
0.28% CO
11.3% CO2
5.4% O2
Air Fuel Ration 18.4

The Bearing were from Eurocarparts... ?3.78 for just the bearing or ?8.77 for the kit (split bin, grease cap etc..)

It does only take 10mins!! take the wheel off... remove the hub and fit... easy...

it will be alot easier on your car Dan as you have drums on the back, its a pain to get the rear discs off.
you did replace the shells as well as the bearings?

Yep... very easy with drum brakes...
I did replace the shell too.
Do you reckon it looks like the air mix is too high then? i think so.
