Car has just been in for its first variable service, when I picked the car up it still said 5000 miles or 36 days, so back into the dealership for them to reset.

Now the service display says service in _ _ _ _ miles, or _ _ _ Days. Is this normal? Will it fill in the blanks after a few miles?

Thanks Stuart

Do you have a GTI?  If so, you really shouldn't be on LongLife servicing!  Have a read of this thread for more info, and the pros and cons of LongLife: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=65779

The dashes in the SID will "fill in" after about a week or 250miles, though they can take upto 500miles.  This is only applicable to LongLife servicing.  On the fixed interval Time and Distance, the miles and days will be viewable immediately.

HTH, and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the informative reply as always TT. I use variable servicing as the car does 90% motorway mileage and I drive pretty steady  :embarassed:  5mm on the front tyres after 12.5k and 7mm on the back  + I get the car serviced every 12k ish (which takes me about 18 months)

Thanks for the welcome, not new to the site, have been lurking for 18 months.

Just to double check - are we saying non-long life is every 10k ?

Does it not say so in the link posted in reply #1 of this thread?  :undecided:

T&D if you do less that 10k miles per year but at what markers should you aim for - just out of interest.

Doesnt the LL work out around intervals of 18k/2yrs and the T&D every 10k

It is Friday and maybe I missed it somewhere..  I'll dig the book out later.

Sorry neg, I've just had another read of that thread, and it don't state the intervals!  :embarassed:

Anyway - for the "Time and Distance" servicing, then the actual intervals are 12 months or 10k miles - whichever occurs soonest.

For the "LongLife" servicing regime, for a petrol engine, it can go up to 24 months or 20k miles, again, whichever occurs soonest.  However, unlike the T&D above (which WILL reach one or the other of the upper levels), with LongLife, there is absolutely no guarantee that you could reach either of the upper levels.  Even on LongLife regime, it can still ping for a service in as little as 12months, or as shockingly as little as 9,600miles - which is is effectively T&D territory.   At this extreme example, the LongLife can actually cost more to service - because you will be needing a "full" 20k service every 10k miles.  If you were on the T&D regime, then you would only be paying for effectively an oil and filter change at 10k, and then going another 10k before paying for the larger 20k service.  :nerd:

HTH, and perhaps I ought to update my sticky.  :embarassed:

No worries, was around the mark I was thinking anyway.  Checking as I have done just over 10k since my last service which was a full so going to get an oil change done this time round and switch to every 10k - only downside now is having to pay around £70 extra just for that dealer stamp

if your car was on long life service can you just take it in at 12 months and have the time/Distance and get it set to td always ?

Yep.

But the crucial thing is to ensure they still continue to use the much higher spec, and better quality LongLife 3 oil.  Sometimes the stealers will use the old skool 502.00 oil, which is OK, but certainly not as good as the LL3 brew.  Best bet is to take your own oil in.
