whats the best fuel uve found to run ur mk3 on

if ur after a few more miles to a full tank add a few ml of acetone to ur tank quiet alot of car clubs have been doing this one pearson got 80 miles extra out the tank.

Whats acetone? some additive or somin? where can you get it from?

its a chemical can be found in nail polish but what u need for ur car is pure acetone. can buy it direct of ebay!

u need to mix it 2ml of acetone to one litre of petrol so if u fill up with 60 litres u want 120ml of acetone to the tank

i dont believe this higher octane stuff really makes much difference !! could be rong and more than likely am , but if you use different fuel than what the engine is designed to run on , dont you need to some how tell the endine its there i,e electronicly?? make sence to me  :huh:im have very little mechanical experince , but i remember back when i had a 16v red top vauxhall , there was a kinda plug thing , that you could change to run  different octane fuels, is there any thing like this on our vw's?

the ecu should alter the timing to suit higher octane fuel (thats why they have all the sensors that don't seem to do alot!)..... I know on newer cars it does but these old mk3's 
you can run the latest audi rs4 on 92 ontane and the ecu automatically detunes the engine....oh and audi advise low revs!

As previously mentioned it's all to do with pre-detonation and knock, something that is more of an issue on high compression engines and turbos. Cars with knock sensors benefit from higher octane, and some turbos will suffer if using the wrong octane fuel. My current scooby is designed to run on Jap 100 RON, so I only have two fuelling options, shell or tesco, makes planning long trips a challenge

Higher octane is not always a good thing as sometimes it can slow down the speed of the flame front, resulting in less power in some engines, it is not a measure of the calorific value of the fuel.

wow sounds like this man know his fuel , iknow jap cars are designed for higher ron , one of my mate's used to import jap cars , could deffo tell the difference from the jap fuel left in there , to the stuff we get!

I also have a BMW330d and i was using Morrisons fuel for quite some time as it is at the end of the road :embarassed: but one day was getting a bit to low to make it home to Morrissons, so filled up with regular shell diesel.
When i pulled out of the garage on to duel lane and floored it what a difference! then the next time i was due to fill up headed back to shell and filled it up with v-power! All i can say is WOW
I fitted a tuning box on the old girl and it was like fitting two more tuning boxes!
So now the 330d gets shell all the time, and the other big bonus is i get on average an extra 70 miles to a tank more
On the golf fuel i have not used it enough to try different fuels, but will give it a try, shell first and then Tesco.

P.S. the 330 is so much smoother as well on the shell stuff!

When I was feeling flush I used to run my tuned classic Mini on Shell Optimax and it went like a bloody rocket in comparison to 95 ron fuel. The guy who rolling roaded the Mini reckoned I'd have got 3 or 4 extra horsepower - and when it's only got 80 to start with...

My 8v loves the stuff too - quicker, smoother & better MPG. Love it!
