pictures of dizzy, dizzy oh dizzy
« on: 02 September 2008, 20:54 »
hey guys,

has anyone got a photo of their dizzy set up they could post up here for me? basically i'm a forgetfull tw@t and forgot to mark the dizzy position before i removed it to sort the head.

my problem is a weak spark from all four leads. I need to check the dizzy orientation before i go deeper into the ignition side of it. Does the hall sender connector sit on the top or the bottom? and which bolt holes are your dizzy screws in, as there are two sets

have done voltage checks to the coil and starter switch, but that's far as i've gone electrically so far. The car started fine before i got my hands on it, so i'm guessing everything's ok, and i've just done something stupid :embarassed:

earth continuity is also there from battery to head to coil bracket to body..........

thanks in advance peeps,
james

basic enigne timeing

crank your enigne round to number 1 TDC,    check the cam timeing marks line up if not go another turn.
remove dizzy cap,  look for the line etched in the body of the dizzy and line the rotor arm up with said mark,  the lead it points to is now number 1.
if it won't rotate that far remove dizzy turn rotor arm a bit,  you may have to turn the oil pump drive shaft a bit as well
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

if your looking straight on to the dizzy from the wing, hall sender should be about 7 o'clock.

oh.............

so obviously the dizzy will work both orientations then? mine is currently at around 7 o'clock, and i still have weak spark.

need to check the alignment marks inside the dizzy at TDC to be sure.

thanks,
james.

My hall sender is underneath fyi but dizzy will work any way you like, as long as you plug sparky lead #1 in where the rotor arm points when top end is at TDC and follow the correct firing order (1 3 4 2, anti-clockwise on a 16v).  As long as its close enough to run you can then set the ignition timing exactly right with a timing light.
But there isnt any reason not to fit it in the right spot while you're there, I mean you have marks and everything why not use them
If you follow everything danny said the dizzy will be in the correct position.

The cam tdc mark is on the outside of the pulley, it lines up with a mark on the rocker cover.  While you're there make sure the crank also lines up, there is a notch on the crank pulley & an arrow on the cam belt cover.  Remember the crank turns twice for every single rotation of the cam and dizzy, so if both marks dont line up at first try turning it over some more!

Ideally you want to use the punch mark on the flywheel as its more accurate, plus you need to be able to see the marks on the flywheel anyway to do the ignition timing.  Here is a piccy, the small round dent is TDC for doing the belt timing, the large diamond is used to set the ignition timing.  Mark em both with tipex so you can see em better!

I have a 16V KR Engine, and I think my timing maybe out. It runs at about 1050rpm even from cold. The revs feel a little heavy. Can this be due to the TDC being out of position. I gave the car to a garage, and they just could no tget it to 950RPM, they adjusted the CO2, and the rotor arm, and also the idle screw but were unsuccessful. I have never played around with timing. Can i do it myself? and How?

Thanks

1k rpm is about right for a kr, so I'd not be worried about that.
try the mk2 maintenance + info sections at the top of the MK2 section, might be amazed at the wealth of information you will find there
