Rear bias/compensator valve thing..

The haynes book of lies says "take it to vw"  to get this thing set up, is this 100% correct as id rather not pay them silly money for it.  Is there no thumb rule on this one?? Ben

If you mean the one on the brake lines, I can't see what for. The only thing I know you need to do is make sure it's open when bleeding the brakes.

iirc, it's closed when the car is standing still and the arm will only move 1 way from there, towards the main body of the valve.

Yea wicked. Cheers.   One thing that baffles me though... if you go over a bump, round a corner whilst breaking surely this device wouldnt help scatty back ending? :undecided:

This gizmo is a load compensator so it adjusts the rear braking power depending on the weight you are carrying in the back. It has no effect on the car when cornerings.

The only time this should need adjusting is if you renew it or if you lower the car. All you need do if you lower the car is undo the bolt when the car is sat on the floor naturally, it will self adjust and you just have to re-tighten.

it also compensates for weight shift when braking hard,  if you fit big brakes to a car without said gizmo's  and try and anchor up hard  the arse comes up and then locks up.  fount wheels must lock first.

breaking round corners that is sub optimal.  tbh i do it when pooteling around and it's genraly just light braking cos the Muppet in fount has decided to slow down,   it is possible to reduce under steer by braking in the corner but get it wrong and will be pointing wrong way 
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

as danny said! basically when trying to figure out which way is 'open' get underneath and picture how the beam will pull on the valve as it is pushed upwards i.e. with weight in the back.  This is how you clamp it fully open for brake bleeding if it helps:
