Newbie Seeking Advise on Mk4 1.8 T GTI 210BHP
« on: 28 August 2008, 22:30 »
Hi Folks,

I'm new to the site but currently looking to get myself a mk4 1.8 T GTI.

Long story short I'm looking for any advise, tips or just any info you could give me with regards to things to look out for when buying one of these.

Today I've found one locally 1999 T reg, 106k miles, full VW service history and revo chipped up to 210bhp (approx). From the photo's I've been sent the bodywork looks pretty clean and generally well looked after.

I'm not all that technically minded myself so was hoping you could help me out with what to look out for when I go to view the car ie essential work that really ought to have been done to a car of this age/mileage and also anythng that should have been done in the way of uprating the car to deal with the additional power provided by the chip?

I'm going along with my brother who lives and breathes anything mechanical but as I say your knowledgeable input from your experiences would be invaluable so as we have some idea of what to look out for when we go to see it.

Cheers,

Al

Indeed, I had my AGU re-mapped, and was told I'd be getting around 195bhp, mines a 199 model too.  Hope it's a great car :)

Thanks for the quick responses, much appreciated

Gonna have a look through those links and no doubt I'll be back soon with some dumbass questions so be warned.

I'm not overly bothered about the power of the car so long as it runs well and has a bit of a kick when I put the foot down...just think they're great lookin cars.

Thanks again guys

Was speaking to the lads at AMD Tuning in Thurrock yesterday as im also currently looking for a 20V and they reccomend going for a car from 2001 onwards if you have got the cash because they have better ECU's and you can get more power from them.

Hope this helps mate.
Golf SOLD. Replaced with a Yamaha Raptor 660 quad and loving it. This will be replaced in August with a Raptor 700. Sold the quad now got a Vectra GSI 2.5 V6 and its the nuts.

2000 onwards. Look for an AUM if you're only going to have a remap.
