a 1.1 wont have the same trim etc as a gti, also the log book wont say gti, so when selling it wont be that good either
also its nice to restore it myself, as i know i did it myself, and can do it the way i want from scratch

yeah its nice to restore it yourself i must admit but from experiecnce (just coming to the end of my respray, absolute barsteward of a job) i'd say look for a mk1 with the best body work you can get for your money. bodywork is the hardest/most expensive/most time consuming job ever imo, and aslong as thats tight you can then set to work on your abf'd slammed beast etc....
if i was you i'd look for mint bodywork with maybe no m.o.t. from purley from mechanical failures. I think mechanicals are he most fun anyway and its rewarding

course I have that feeling...hence i miss it when i don't drive it
I remember someone on this forum saying that he wouldn't feel right if he pulled up in a mk1 to say a business meeting...but i think they are cool cars anytime..maybes im just biased though?
anyhoo...back to topic...he just said he was getting a golf, and mentioned the 1.1 so I didn't know he was just after a gti..hence the suggestion of a conversion
totally agree with u bigman...its alot harder if you haven't got the time/money/skills etc.. like me

yh i under-estimated the amount of time it took myself, but by this time i was at the point of no return so i had to knuckle down and go for it. just waiting for this 'lovley summer weather' to brighten up so i can base coat and laquer!
I'd do mechanicals anyday, engine conversions are obviously a 'big job' that you can get stuck in with to whatever extent you want, from a 1.6 gti conversion to a 20vt the amount of work can be dictated by choice to an extent, with bodywork though its more of an all or nothing job becuase if you cut corners on the smalest things they come back around and stab you in the back when its 'finished' trust me

i'd buy the 1.1 and go for the sleeper look. for me the love i have for the mark 1 isnt because its a gti its because its a mark 1. the fact that it goes quite quick is an added bonus. 1.8 turbo'd mark 1 please

Personally I'd go either 16v or 20vt. 16v because I think it really suits the mk1 and it's driveability, or a 20vt because it's a modern engine in an iconic car.
If I was ever going the supercharge route in a mk1 I think I'd go for a G40 rather than a G60 as I think that suits the mk1 more.
