Those stainless steel ashtrays from early GTi’s are like gold dust you'll only get one from a breakers yard these days as they were discontinued, so you were lucky.

I fitted a cover when I got mine. Got it from VW. The colour is slightly darker, its a perfect match for the DSG surround
Bye Bye Edition 30

£40? you're off your head.

I take it you think thats expensive? You obviously don't realise how much work is involved in getting a good finish on a cr@ppy plastic. When you think what painters must be charged out at by the hour i think it's a bargain.

Thanks Greenouse, the R32 ashtray was the first thing I added

I really like the look of the R32 ashtray.  I take it that it would be a straightforward addition to the GTI?

Looks fantastic .
In reference to the silver ashtray, I got a sticker from ebay for a few euros and put it over the plain black ashtray and it looks great. When it gets very hot an odd bubble might appear but I just flatten it out in a minute and it's back to looking mint .

Funny you should say that, the bodyshop offered to match the colour of the Pescara's and I agreed, then as I was about to turn the corner at the end of the street I bottled it and turned back...got them to do it bright silver as the idea was to brighten the interior. Would be interesting to see what it a darker colour would look like.

Thanks for all the positive comments, makes modding that little bit more rewarding

Yep it's a 15 minute job to take out the ashtray, unclip the black plastic trim and re-attach the R32 trim. You need to pull out the plastic trim attached to the base of the gear stick gater revealing 2 torx screws, undo these and the whole ashtray assembly simply pulls towards you. Unplug the cables attached to the lighter socket tyre monitor & ESP switches (make sure the key isn't in the ignition so you don't trip any warning lights) and swap over the trim.

Check out this thread which helped me http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=40936.0

You need 2 separate parts, the R32 'engine spun' ashtray lid (part no. 1K0857351B8B4) and surround (part no. 1K0863487B8B4) these cost me £70 after I wangled a 10% discount which works out cheaper than VW Speed.

Would be interesting to know the part numbers for that Tagnut and whether you can get the surround to go with it

Love the look of the inserts but can't help thinking they'd be nicer if they were chrome trim like the other bits of the ED30. Hmmmm....gotta get a siggy.
