Rocker cover refurb?
« on: 12 August 2008, 23:47 »
Anyone got any tips for this, mine's very rusty and it seems like a good place to start refurbing the engine bay.

Just done this recently on a mate's Scirocco.

Looked like this when we opened the bonnet....

Then after a wire brush...

Then broke out the drill & wire brush attachment...

At this point we contemplated polishing it, but for practicality reasons of it being a 'daily' we decided on the stock/ Hamerite option...

Which left us with the finished article!

Hope that helps!

It would stand out way too much with a powder coating  Not sure about black though, would silver work?

Cheers, sounds like a lot less effort than polishing anyway. If you polish, how long before it just rusts up again?

If you apply something like Alu Blu or similar metal polish/protector then it'll stay that way!

how close to the original factory matt black does black hammerite smooth look? I want mine to look original, rather than looking like it's been repainted black.

Well we used shiney (normal) hammerite but you can get Matt black stuff which would probably look more 'original'
