Differences between 17" and 18" alloys?
« on: 12 August 2008, 03:34 »
I was thinking of getting some BBS RR alloys for my golf and was wondering if there is much of a difference between 17" alloys and 18" ones? I know that 18" ones will have a rougher ride, but is it noticeable worse? How is the handling effected?
Thanks

I have recently changed from the standard 17" GTI wheels to the 18" pescara's and not noticed any change in handling at all.

I,m sure others will be more technical in their answers..

an inch...

Sorry, couldn't resist

On a serious note I doubt you would notice the difference 'that' much from 17 to 18, less tyre wall roll as they will have lower profile rubber giving slightly better handling but mildly harder ride. Nothing to worry about, just get 19's ...

*Cough* sorry, but didn't the GTI with 17"s on lap 2.5 seconds a lap faster than the same car with 18"s on, in the Evo tyre test?

18's look better, period. But 17's get kerbed less (more tyre sidewall), make the car handle better as it was designed to run on 17's, weigh less and accelerate a teeny bit better.

Also no white worm on the 17's, they cost less and are easier to get hold of. I chose them after finding the ride on a GTI with 18's on a little harsher than the 17's. Well happy with mine. Looks aren't everything

You ought to try budgeting for these puppies:

And being as its a <cough> Torsen <cough> quattro, all four need replacing in one go!

And as for those anchors, £300 ish for a set of pads, and over £2k for each disc!

....^Ouch!! Expensive!! But awesome.

Thank goodness I'm generally not heavy on brake use - Only on spirited stints when circumstances allow and if I'm in the mood (whenever safely possible!).
