so if i can find some 16v GTI calipers all i need hubs i can fit the 256mm discs

And for the 280 can i still use the GTI calipers but need the master cylinder and the carriers ,

256+ 4 stud hubs will work with 256 and 280 calipers/carriers, they're the same. Passats are a gold mine for 256 setups, breakers usually dont know that they're the same as MK2 16v and so charge less

the 256 calipers will fit 280 carriers, but to fit over 280 discs you need part worn 256 pads or to grind down the slider pins slightly, as the 280 discs are thicker than 256.

Is there any cars with 280mm were this also applies?

Not really, 4 stud 280 cars arnt so common, you'll find them in higher spec SEAT Ibizas and Corrados, as well as Golf G60s.  Problably high spec passats too.  If you really want 280s the cheapest way is prob to get some 256 hubs off a passat, then from same scrappy nick the calipers n carriers off a MK3 GTI.  Either that or watch ebay like a hawk

main issue with getting em from a scrappy is you need the car on the ground to crack off the hub nut, then you need the car in the air to get the wheel off

I've been very lucky and managed to get a complete 16v 256mm set up inc hubs for £51 off ebay. The seller had some relisting probs and must have put people off. I need new discs and pads so not sure if it's worth getting hold of 280 mm caliper/carriers. Is there much of a difference? Would also be useful to know about the TT master cylinder as will also be replacing that. Will the servo need up grading?

the passat you mention the v6 4motion has 312 brakes on it also 5stud so no good

best for a driver is a goodbake service new brake fluid as chances are its not been changed for a while  and vented Gti disks unless you are planning on increasing the engine size

i rang a local scrap yard up and they have the mk2 vr6 front calipers and said £100 without VAT , nothing else with them , is that abit exspensive ?

Was that Silverlakes by any chance?

yeah it was silverlakes , i found a pair of 256mm gti 16v on ebay a man is breaking one and said £60 for the calipers and carriers ,

You can pick up 16v calipers and carriers alot cheaper than that on ebay. If your not in a rush I may have some you can have for £10 + p&p

Don't even bother with them, i always find without exception that they tell you one price and then when you go get the part(s) they'll suddenly increase the price when you go to pay. I normally argue it back down apart from the last time when i just dumped all the parts on his desk and phone and walked out, not going to give the dicks any more of my money
