model and year?
« on: 08 August 2008, 06:24 »
Quick question guys I have what I thought was a 2005 (55) DSG engine code AXX. First registered 05/09/2005.

I have just noticed that the VIN has "1K6" in the code, does this mean that the car is actually a 06 model?

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

I believe it does.....

Do you have the radio ariel on the roof or is it built in?

Mine's an 05 and presumably one of the early ones as it doesn't have the roof aerial, at work there is another 05 which does have the roof aerial so I presume that they changed the spec somewhere early 2005?

Sorry to hijack but when did the engine change from AXX and whats the difference?  Am I right in thinking the cam lobe wear problem doesn't affect the early models (ie mine!)

Are you sure the "1K6" is actually in the 17 digit VIN, rather than listed as a separate "TYP" code on the VIN sticker?

Because normal Golf Vs (which are built at Wolfsburg) have the following VINs - WVWZZZ1KZ@W****** - where the "@", or 10th digit indicates the model year, and the last six asterixes are merely the numeric serial number.

The "TYP" code of "1K6" consists of two separate parts - the "1K" indicates the basic type of vehicle - in this case a Volkswagen Golf Mk5, built on the A5 (or correctly termed "PQ35") platform.  The "6" indicates that it is a right-hand drive car.

Thanks TT, yes its in the long vin number at the 10th digit place.

Aerial looks built in, cant say i have paid too much attention to it..will have another look, however I am sure that TT is correct in these matters....therefore its an 06

Does that mean, when I come to sell the car, that I can legitimately market it as a (55) 06 ? probably not eh? the year tends to mean its year of registration, doesn't it?

Mine has 2 ariels on top of the car and in the rear heating element. It switches between the two depending on which one has best signal (so I have been told).

A roof aerial won't necessarily indicate any change in model year.   It probably indicates differing levels of communications kit fitted (radio/GSM prep/SatNav).

Sorry to hijack but when did the engine change from AXX and whats the difference?

I think it was for the 2007 model year, but I can't find a definative answer.  :embarassed:

Not sure on this.  I have strong suspicions that it is nothing to do with the actual engine code, but more to do with the mod-happy Yanks, who refuse to use the higher spec LongLife 3 oils, which were specifically developed for the FSI engines.

....We discussed this in great detail in another thread - Perhaps it was on Tyresmoke. I'll see if I can find the thread. Long story short is that none of us here in UK found that our VW dealers could locate the issue about a month ago. The VW doc about it originated across the pond, so T_T isn't telling porky pies  .

Ohhh - that a little confusing.  So just to clarify, your VIN looks like: "WVWZZZ1KZ6*******", and 1K6 is NOT in your actual 17 digit VIN ???

Aerial looks built in, cant say i have paid too much attention to it..will have another look, however I am sure that TT is correct in these matters....therefore its an 06

Yup, a 2006 "model year".

Does that mean, when I come to sell the car, that I can legitimately market it as a (55) 06 ? probably not eh? the year tends to mean its year of registration, doesn't it?

Hmm, in the UK, we are quite strict on dates when selling cars.

The established practice (before the numeric year plates were introduced) was to advertise the car by registration letter and registration year - for example - a "1999 T-reg".

For these new plates, the same logic follows, but due to the twice-yearly plate changes, can throw an element of confusion.  Let's take a car registered on 1st February 2006 - this may have a plate something like GE55 XYZ - so you could/should advertise the car as something like "2006 55-plate".

In your specific instance, I'm guessing that your car was registered during the period of 1st September 2005 to 31 December 2005 - if so, you must advertise it as "2005 55-plate".  Of course you can also list it as a "2006 model year", but being as the average UK motoring public won't know about automotive model years, you will need to explain that the model year indicates the programmed minor changes in specification at the production line.  I personally don't know what the 2006 m/y changes were, but for the 2007 m/y, the changes included silver knobs for the radio/SatNav, and deletion of a colour option (to name a couple).
