re-hijacking, if the man's spending as much as he says he is - why not get a DSLR?
If I'm honest I don't touch the capabilities my 400D has, but I still get a much better result than if I was shooting with a compact. The colours are so much richer than a compact and they catch the action exactly when you want - I've found with much better definition than a compact, too.
Unless you want something you can slip into a pocket without creating an unslightly bulge (matron) then DSLRs are where it's at, whether you're using them stoopid like I am, or in a very involved manner, as Nick is.
Corking photos as ever, Nick - your shots have come a long way in a very short time.

When are you changing your username to Rankin2?
