Warranty expires should I.....
« on: 04 August 2008, 09:36 »
My warranty runs out on 5th September :(

1. should I pay the £400 for another years extension?

2. I want to put the car into the dealers to get its MOT early...thereby if there is anything that is required to be fixed, it hopefully can be done under warranty. However is there a list of items I should ask the dealer to check?

I have heard about issues with the Steering Racks, some people have had them replaced under warranty, where they creak under full lock.

Theres rust around the calipers, believe that there have been people successfully negotiating with dealers to get this fixed under warranty ...don't know how much chance I would have after 3 years however...probably none.

I have a couple of interior rattles, sunroof (when the blind is in the fully retracted position) and a rattle in my centre console around the arm rest...but I was told by one dealer that the warranty doesn't cover all rattles for the full period of the warranty!

Is there anything else that I need to get checked, verified as ok before the warranty runs out?

The car runs perfectly, the a/c is cold as a polar bears bum....any advice would be most welcome :)

Get it booked in for a pre MOT inspection and that way they can tell you if there is anything wrong.

I'll have this dilemma next year.

I'll probably get some other quotes first from the following:

http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/

and

http://www.warrantywise.co.uk/?gclid=CLPVl4OO9JQCFQpYQgodLBuFqg

Used both before - most recent was Warranty Direct with my Boxster. Found them to be fast and efficient and even settled with the dealer direct.

The extended warranty isnt with VW directly, its a 3rd party company.

As Mat stated, get it booked in for a pre-expiry check - and to make sure get the MOT done a month early to make sure nothing else it picked up before the warranty expires - then you have 13months MOT too!

no offense boys and girls, but a MOT at a VW dealer isnt going to pick up many problems that would be fixed under warranty.

An MOT is for the road worthiness of the car.  Even if the steering rack makes a noise, as long as its road legal, they wont care.  Unless you are good mates with the tester, an early MOT isnt going to be that beneficial, unless you know of problems and want a second opinion.

I really wouldn't bother paying out £400, especially to a third party company, keep it and save it in case you need it for any work.

Yep, the rack issue is of course NOT not MOT material, its a known fault.

But booking it in early for its MOT a month early allows any MOT issues (that are covered by Warranty) to be dealt under warranty.

When booking in I will mention the rack noise and they can hopefully look at it, together with the disc rust issue at the same time.

....A pre MOT inspection isn't the same as the actual MOT. It's something which a good VW dealer will offer separately before MOT and before warranty ends.

My VW dealer privately advised me not to bother with extending the warranty - It's all weighted in the insurance comapany's favour.

Only you can make that call!

NEVER let a main stealer do your MoTs.  They will merely "overlook" any suspect item which may be a warranty claim, but then fail it the following year, and sting you for the repair bills.  Always use an independent MoT test centre, even if you have "free" MoTs thrown in with some servicing package - using an inde for the MoT is like getting a 2nd opinion, and should the MoT fail, or give you an advisory, then the main stealer wont be able to argue with their findings!

Ohhh errrr - I bet if you poke your finger up the polar bears bum, it won't be too cold!
