I dont work for VW so I dont know. But:
1. The Gti has 30 years of heritage and design etc behind it.
2. The Scirocco is similar except not as old I dont think.
The Gti holds its value and the Scirocco comes out the same factory using similar parts and design methods... It is a well built vehicle and can apparently more or less rival a GTi from what I have read.
I dont see why it wont hold its value as well. Look at the Jetta, caddy and those ranges. They not GTi's and they keep their value. It might not be a GTi but its still VW and all VW's keep their value well.

IIRC the Scirocco is older than the Golf and certainly older than the GTI.
In the UK the Jetta depreciates really quickly and isn't a good buy new (used is a different matter though - bargain)
I think the Scirocco will become a bit of a cult car all over again.
