Whats that Dimming thing called around the Wing Mirrors?

i have no idea, thats why im asking. I think all GTI's do. Can you have a check if yours does and if its just the driver side or both sides....?

yeh of course, will do it in the morning, i have to say i have not even noticed the black bit, **edit **  i have found a pic of my passenger mirror and it looks like yours (as in no black bit), i will check my drivers side tomorrow

the dimming mirrors for both sides was discontinued early in the MY2006 cars as a cost cutting exercise leaving only the driver side with the dimming mirror.

furthermore the electrical harness that supported the dimming function on the passanger side was also removed so that you can't retrofit a dimming passanger side mirror and expect it to work.

yeh i do, its standard on the ed30 i think

The dimming drivers side mirror was part of the lux pack that came with folding mirrors.

My GTI is MY55 plate. It has the Lux Pack.
Im sure mine had the black thing around both wing mirrors but im not sure. The reason i ask is because i was recently in an accident where a plonker went into my passenger side which meant that the passenger side wing mirror had to be replaced. And if it is discontinued then that would explain why the new replacement does not have the black thing around the passenger side wing mirror....

well, i have heated mirrors on mine, but i dont have any black on either side of the car

you were supplied with the wrong passenger mirror.
Whoever supplied it probably didn't specify the MY correctly hence you got a later version non-dimming mirror.

but if they are discontinued (early 2006) that would mean if you order it from VW then they would only supply you with the non-dimming current version wouldnt they as they havent produced the dimming version since 2006....?
