Direct Drop In?
« on: 06 May 2008, 05:04 »
Hi again,

I was wondering if a 1987 GTI with a 8v could be directly replaced with a 16v. Would it slide into place or would I need to fabricate my own mounts, would I have to change the wiring or the electronics?

Any help appreciated,

Yes it will drop straight in, but modifications to the loom I think may be required. As your is an '87, it will have the same injection system so no real problems there. The exhaust pipe will be different though. Correct me if I am wrong but I think the 16v uses a slightly bigger bore exhaust.

are 87's kjet then? didnt think they counted as 'early'

in that case you need the engine wiring loom, the idle module and loom (bit behind centre console on 16v's), and everything in the 16v engine bay basically! (except battery and expansion tank!) use your old rad if its in good nick.

WTF?

You goon - they're two totally different injection systems - K-Jet = mechanical, Digifant = electronic.

87 *should* be digifant.

All G2 16V motors run on K-Jet.

Oh and 16V gearboxes have a larger input shaft and run a bigger clutch.

This means you'll need the pressure pump from a 16V as well as the motor and really you'll need the 256mm front brakes and 22mm master cylinder from the 16V to make sure it stops.  oh that's after you've either fitted the weaker 8V clutch on your (weaker) 8V gearbox... which will have ratios not designed to work with the 16V motor.

Go find a Toledo 16V and drop the front subframe, taking the engine and box out - fit the lot and have an ABF with 280mm front brakes, a cable-change box et al.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

in that case ignore what i said and run it on digifant like the 2.0l 16v's in the golf mk3's

87 WILL be K-Jet. Digi's came in mid to late 88. Early E reg are K-Jet, late E reg onwards are Digifant.

Don't think you can say for definite if an 87 would be digifant or k-jet. I've had an 87 8v on an E plate that was digifant but still had all the ugly grey and red horizontal striped interior and quarter lights on the front.

As for the ratios on an 8v box not working with a 16v motor, depends which gearbox you have. My gearbox on my 8v has exactly the same ratios and FD, with the exception of 5th gear being ever so slightly taller.
