well, i can assure you, if i have a lively drive through some twisty roads for more than 10minutes, exhaust turns raspy as hell and if i look under my car, cat is glowing orange. considering my exhaust usually has a deep note to it, its rather annoying.

update : went out to the car after work last night... and would you believe this... it started first time

not happy at all, been 2days without the car because it was 20miles away and didnt want to go out there without a few relays. unlocked the car, put the key in, thought to myself "meh, i'll try it fors sh!ts and giggles" and it started up straight away.

drove it home without changing a thing before it decided it didnt want to play anymore. after an hour or 2 speaking to a few mates, changed over the Fuel Pump relay and bloody hell what a difference!!! the holding back is gone, i did about 35 miles and it used roughly a gallon (a hell of a lot better than 8.5mpg thats for sure!!) and the cat is no longer going bright orange.

on a different note... i did go to change relay 30 (ECU relay)... but one slight problem... there isnt one    there's not one in my car or my friends 1.4, so am guessing only the GTi's had ECU relays?

will still be testing with VAGCOM when i get hold of a lead just to make sure all is well, because i dont see how the fuel pump relay would stop the coil sparking, so am guessing the problem of the random death is still there, but all the other problems are sorted. will keep you's updated with what the actual problem is. just a bit strange that it refused to start that morning even after leaving it for 3/4 hours, yet, i go back 2days later, and she starts first time

Relays are funny things, lots of switches inside which use a small voltage to control a larger one, different parts break etc and they can do all sort of things

well, the inevitable happened, broke down less than half a mile from my work    sooner i get a vagcom lead the better!!

EDIT - just had a thought... the crank angle sensor... would this be affected in any way if one of the engine mounts needs replaced? wouldnt really make sense as the distance travelled varies each time it cuts out, but each time it cuts out, it refuses to start again for at least an hour each time

was using XP on them but they was refusing to work full stop. tried it on my mate's laptop and it worked. result of scan :

Address 01: Engine
   Controller: 032 906 026 D
   Component: 1,6l R4 MONO 1.3    D71
   Coding: 00000
   Shop #: WSC 00000
1 Fault Found:
00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
            03-00 - No Signal
Readiness: N/A

so yeah, the dreaded Hall Sensor

could also be timing related if it's not long had a new cambelt, if the timing is too far out it will show a hall sensor fault
