Sony Xplops are sh!te,I guess they're 6x9's? You'd be better off with a decent sub and amp in the rear,I use Infinity Reference Speakers in my Mk3 but use a crossover with them to take out all the Bass and the sub in the boot balances out the sound nicely. Are you running an amp at all or relying on Headunit power only? If you are just using a headunit try running an amp through the 6x9's first, then if it still sound bad you have the amp to run a sub from.
Good Advise is something men give when too old to set a bad example

Yes - I will check the speakers aint crossed - the speakers are all 17cm comps with x overs and infinity tweeters straight swop for all the factory fits - the hu is a sony 5100 and the amp is a sony xplod  60w x 4 - it sounds really bright ( treble heavy ) - bass is minimal

you running the amp on high pass filter?

if using crossovers i believe the filter needs to be set to "flat" or normal.

try swapping the +ve and -ve wires on the speakers, even if you think you've got it right.

try them one at a time, one speaker could be cancelling out the bass of the other speaker.

I don't think a semi will give the same results
