Replacing Mk2 dash speakers - noob alert!
« on: 22 April 2008, 10:20 »
Sorry if this is an oft-repeated question but I'm a total noob when it comes to ICE (electrics in general, really).
Trying to swap the knackered dash speakers on my 85 GTI and need some guidance please.

On the right is the OE Kenwood speaker, which was connected up with two clip things (different sizes).
On the left is a replacement Nokia speaker (allegedly OE on later/other models). It has different connectors (inside the plastic housing), so how can I connect it up?
Answers that don't involve the word 'solder' will be particularly welcome  :embarassed:

I just cut the plastic connecter off (it has two wires then the plastic bit) and then bared the ends and wrapped them around the metal connectors and put insulation tape around them. Basically thats the cheating way instead of soldering...

What I would do is carefully cut away all the plastic surrounding the terminals on the nokia speaker with a sharp stanley knife. I would then get some crimp connectors from halfords that fit on the terminals and crimp them onto the cables. Connect up and job's a gooden.

Or better still you can buy adating leads.. with the same plug as is on the elft speaker, but with pigtails with the spades on for the right one

Yeah Nick - Autoleads make them!

Simon - pigtails = the little extensions of wire on plugs and things, jsut a slang term i guess, and the spades, are crimped on, to connect to the terminals on the speakers to the right

Halfords I know can order them in - but i got mine at a lcoal independent place.. one of those oens like Motorworld that sell everything and anything auto related
