Hicon GT's v Eibach/Koni
« on: 20 April 2008, 19:50 »
Evening guys
Been looking at a new suspension set up for the car when I get paid

I've narrowed it down to
The Weitec Hicon GT's
http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pages/products/product_info.mhtml?product=3770744

Which I've heard mainly good things about and read this thread-
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=50409.0

Although there was complaints of bouncyness?
Which seemed to settle but has anyone else had experience with these?

The other option is Koni adjustable front dampers, non-adjustable rears and Eibach springs.
I know this is widely known as the best set up for handling on a mk2 which is the thing I want to improve most on the car, but I feel I may be disappointed by the drop it gives as it sits quite high now.
Will the Weitec set up be in any way comparable, handling-wise, to the Koni/Eibach set up?
I would lower it about 40mm tops, or basically until the arches sit slightly above the wheels.

Also how do Koni springs compare to the Eibach ones?
Are they far inferior?

Finally
What size spanner do I need to remove the nut at the top when I do remove my old struts?
Is it 22mm?

Cars a late 1990 8v!

Thanks

I have a budget of £400-500 max really, before I forget

if you get the koni shocks get the kit for a corrado then the rears are top adjustable as well!

its a good setup, i cant comment on the other ones you have mentioned. i think the spanner you need is either 22 or 24mm

Cheers for that mate :afro:
90% on the Koni/Eibach set up now anyways!

I've seen this mentioned before.
Will there be any fitment issues?
And also wouldn't the dampers be set up for the Corrado, not a Golf?

Cheers

How low do you want, what kind of roads/driving do you do?

Well I was thinking 40mm as I heard its the best to get the wishbones level and the wheels would just sit nicely in the arches
After thinking about it further, I don't think I can justify height adjustment when Eibachs offer practically 40mm lowering
I probably won't be taking the car on a track, if I do it won't be often and I prefer B road blasts and am planning trips to the Isle of Mann etc :afro:

Handling comes way before looks in my opinion, but I just feel I could be disappointed with the stance of the car, especially if the Weitecs offer as-good-as handling, but allow me to get the car sat just how I want as that would be the best of both worlds
However, if the ride is inferior to the Koni/Eibach set up then I will plump for that I reckon

Hopefully I've explained myself

hmm, I have Weitec coils on my G60 and Eibach springs on my daily. both Mk2s

If your car is a daily driver, and you want B road handling I would recommend the Eibach/Koni tbh.
especially if you complement with Eibach ARBs.

The Wetiec are of course height and damping adjustable, but the ride is going to be quite a bit stiffer.

Ahh I see
Cheers for that
I'll probably go with the Eibach/Koni set up because at least I know the handling will be much better! And just fingers crossed that the stance will be ok
The GT's don't come with damping adjust I don't think, so I would be stuck if the ride was too bumpy on the B roads

Aye, ARBs are on the list to buy too at some point.
Would a full set be recommended?
Or is just a rear one acceptable?

Again, this depends on what you are after, some brave folks who use a mk2 for track only will do away with the front arb completely and leave the OEM rear on.

The Eibach ARBs are not adjustable, but are a well balanced pair.

H&R do adjustable ones, and Weitec have also just started making a set.

If you want to do rear only,  I'd be tempted to get an adjustable one, then you can tweak the handling.
i.e. stiffening the bar will of course give a more neutral bias then a rear less progressive, giving you much more lift off oversteer.

That's interesting stuff pal, I'll definately have to look into that

The adjustability appeals to me so I might look into the H&R set when I can scrape some more money together

I think I'd prefer a balanced set up more so than a less progressive one, as it'd be much safer and more controllable on the road.

Looks like I'll go for Koni adjustable fronts, non-adjustable rears (due to budget ) and Eibach springs with some adjustable ARBs when I can afford it
