Clutch Cable Fitting

Any tips on how to fit this? I thought the clutch was knackered but it is apparently the cable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Its realy easy mate, at the pedal end its just a hook that goes onto the top of the pedal and at the gearbox end just get enough slack in the cable (I put a jack under the clutch arm and lifted it slightly) and remove the old one makeing sure you refit all the bits the same way they cam off. I had a self adjusting one but binned that and put a normal manual adjustment one on.

Does it make a difference what typre is used? Self adjusting would be easier would'nt it?

Dont know mate, I just fitted a manual adjustment one as it looked straight forward. Whats wrong with the one on there now ? The reason I ask is that the pedal on mine didnt feel as though it was coming back up quick enough and the movement of the pedal stopped feeling smooth (felt like the clutch was coming out a bit at a time instead of in one fluid movement). I was advised to hang the clutch cable up verticaly and pour engine oil in the top and let it run down through the length of the cable and out the other end, the oil flushed out loads of crap that was in the plastic sleeve and obviously causing the cable to be a bit sticky. I think the oil cleans and lubricates the cable so it moves through the sleeve easily, mines been fine ever since

That sort of sounds like the problem. It was sticking when returning, however, it will now not select 1st and 2nd but reverse is fine.The RAC guy said it is highly likely to be the cable (quite pleased as he said he was a VW maindealer techy!). I will have a crack at it tomorrow.

i bought a new manual adjusting clutch from GSF for under £10
details below:

ive got a 91 8v and it fitted fine and easy to change.

the gear change was really stiff where the inner cable had worn a channel into the outer plastic covered metal braided cable. this caused it to rust and the gear change was rock ard.

swopped cables and it was smooth as a brand new car after that! i gave the bugger a good greaseing up to to try and prevent any further probs in the future...and because i like getting greased up

^^^ Spot on mate, if that happens its worth taking the clutch cable off and turning it through 180 degrees in order to make sure thats the problem and the cable will move over a completely new part of the outer clutch cable sleeve.

Hey guys

Got the cable finally from VW and fitted it. I am unclear why it is so slack and I have tempory measures in place which will do for now. The problem is, when using the original clips and parts there is so much slack? Any help on this would be appreciated.
