annoying rattle

ive changed the front engine mount for a 16v one. Thought that would solve the annoying rattle problem but no. (smoother and less of a rattle now)

every time i go over a slight dint/bump i get this rattle comng from the front (towards both front wheel areas)

a garage told me its my front calipers (doubt it)

could it be the rear engine mount, exhaust heat shield

dont think its the heat sheild coz it wont make a noise that loud :-\

it cant be my top mounts coz they are new VAG ones.

any advice peeps :(

could be were the subframe bolts to the body? or it could be steering rack mounts perished or rubber bushing on the bottom of the suspension perished, or your steering column could be loose/worn. could be gearbox mounts.

it sounds like its something mount related so i would check them all!

where are the sub frame bolts exactly? this the frame under the front engine mount?

i think its mount related. i did take one wheel off and tap the whole suspension and got the same rattle.

the steering feels solid so not sure about the steering rack mounts, how can i tell mate?

Could be the front brakes, drive over the same bump and brake gently as you go over it. If the noise is gone, check the anti rattle shims on the calliper.

Did you have any luck in solving it ? Not ya shocks is it, they can work loose on the mark 2's.

naa mate, i havnt driven the car over a bump to test mk1's trick yet.

I had this problem after i got the car, it was lowered and the shocks where burst.

ive fitted coilovers and the top mounts did 'click' but i solved that problem by adding washers. (sorted that)

hope its something minor, its soo annoying and its been a few months now. still cant trace the rattle

you will just have to get under the car and look, you will see the subframe bolts easy enough, they are at the back of the engine bay if you lie under the car with your feet poking out from under the front bumper, they will be about were your shoulders sre if you have the sump over your belly. the steering rack is here to, just give everything a look at and try and move things by hand/with a bar see if anything moves. you should be able to spot if anything is adrift. steering racks can wear out inside and not be that noticeable, especially if your boots have perished on the tie rods and let in water and muck
