Check the connections at the motor and battery are clean before buying a new starter. Can you hear any noises when you try to start?

sometimes the dog wheel thing needs greasing, take it off and have a good look also clean all the connectors to it and see what happens.
WARNING the bolts mounting it are part of the front engine mount so the engine will need supporting

try connecting a jump lead from your negative on the battery to somewhere on the engine. I've just had the same problem and mine turned out to be the strap that goes from the gearbox to the shell of the car (aka the earth lead). it had corroded over the years and was making too much resistance. only ?1.90 for a new one. it's a lot better now. I also bought another starter for ?20 from the scrappy.

I'd still replace that strap if it looks a bit old. it's made everything better on my car now. the wipers move much stronger and my ICE doesn't cut the bassline out when you've got it wound up like it use to. had it flat out for a good 15 mins today and was perfect all the time.
