if you push your pedal an inch does the engine rev?

Yeah it revs with no load on the engine, it just feels a bit unresponsive on light application.
For scientific reasons I've just put the car back to standard mapping and driven it about 10 miles, funnily enough it doesn't feel so flat now(?) perhaps I'm just getting used to the car.
Maybe it was that before I bought it I read rave reviews for all those years but actually driving one after a raft of remapped cars it just felt a bit flat low down. Feels fine with the re-map on but even then it doesn't have the torque kick of a mapped 1.8t which is traded off against the fact that it revs much more smoothly.
Overall I love the car and wish I'd bought a GTI a couple of years ago instead of the TDI (having said that, it was a perfectly good car in itself).

Right I'm going to shut up on the subject now, I've decided that the turbo must be far more progressive than the older GTIs and hence it just feels a bit lacking if you're gentle. Many thanks for all the replies and assistance.

hum, gotta have to check myself when i go out next, because i have sorta thought the same... but in my mind, it may be the two things, the 2l engine, then the turbo.. making it seem like the 2l engine just seen slow.. when its not.. im just use to the turbo.. if that makes sense :s

your problem sounds like the normal GTI behavior, i.e not allot low down, but flies then gets over 3k or so

Might be worth trying a throttle body reset - you can do it with VAGCOM or open bonnet and turn on iginition until the high pitched squeel stops (this worked on the 1.8T's and I am sure works on the TSI too).

It will do it without the bonnet being open if its been left for a while - if you dont start up immediately that is.
