Bucket seat fitting..
« on: 10 April 2008, 17:08 »
sorry for another post...

i've got some bucket seats that i want to fit. How do i go about fitting them? i know that i can get some subframes from demon tweeks but will these be made of steel and really heavy? Plus i dont like the look of them. I also ready somewhere that if you mount your seats lower they lower the sence of gravity and hence handle alot better. I wouldnt mind having the seats abit lower as those subrames sit stupidly high anyway...

so so do i go about it?

do i need to weld in some supports onto the chassie, side mounted thingy's?? nay help?
  :nerd:

Proper subframes will make fitting easier.
Mine weighed 8kg each with seat a total of 15.5kgs, about 4.5kgs less than the standard seat.
Side mounts will weigh a lot less but you will lose any easy adjustment, which is ok if it will only be you driving the car.
You should also be able to get side mounts with varying height adjustment holes to allow you to set it at the best height.
Lowering the centre of gravity will help, but how much difference that will make in the real world I don't know.
Sitting lower in the car will make you feel more connected to the car and should make you more aware of what the car is doing. I would worry more about getting a driving position that you are comfortable with.

Cheers

Paul

our car has custom mounts made up. custom makes them sound fancy but they are not. tho original runners were chopped off the seats and welded to a box section subframe to which the seat then bolts.

it is steel and could be lighter but just be aware, that is all that holds the set in in the event of a crash.

as above, in theory lower seat equally lower centre of gravity and you will go aster but i doubt you will notice any difference. might feel faster though!!  you wont be fast if you are not comfortable though. have a sit in as many bucketted cars as you can and have a measure up. are you off to the pod at the weekend? if so i'll pm you my number and you can have a sit in der panza.

just a quick thought, if you liik at rally and touring cars, their seats dont seem particularly low. at a pro level, i think there's a bit of science goes into seating positions

having just looked at my subframes it seems i know sod all about my own car!

the seats have runners bolted directly to them and a subframe is bolted to the runners.  the subframe is made to locate in the standard mounting places and its made out of bar, not box!

this is how it is attached into the runners.

I have simply modified a pair of original subframes. All they need is stripping down + a couple of strips of metal adding.

They are not too bad weight wise and the pair only took around 2hours to make. They are very strong! The seat height is also not too bad either, I used to hit my head on the roof with original seats + helmet on but now im well clear.

The main tools you will need are a welder, grinder, and drill. (If you can't weld then you may be able to bolt together but I think this would compramise their strength)

Iv got to take them out soon as didin't have chance to paint before last track event so will try to get some pics up.

they were made for the previous owner as custom jobbies. looking at the way they attach they should fit mk 1 and 2.

if i had to fit buckets from scratch i'd follow dan's route mentioned above

thread hijack - sorry!!!

I am just ordering some race land buckets with 'model specific' subframes... excuse my ignorance does this mean I just bolt the seat to the subframe and the insert the seat in the same way I would a standard seat? ie...in the original runners and middle clip at the front...

mk3 btw...

want a pair of raceland buckets with model specific subframes for £150 delivered? go here
