Clutch Slip 16v
« on: 16 April 2004, 13:27 »
Any ideas on this problem ?

My car had been off the road for 4 years, during which time I changed the clutch (amongst other things) but hadn't driven it much.

When I put it back on the road in December I was getting a bit of clutch slip - I pu this down to 1. Lack of use (sticky cables) and 2. Newness of the clutch which I hoped would burn off.  After a few good hard runs the slipping went away and I thought everything was hunky dory.

Now 4 months on the clutch slip has come back but is worse than before.  I have:

1. Removed, lubricated and refited the clutch cable (manual adjust)
2. Greased the pedal box linkages
3. Checked the arm on the outside of the gearbox isn't sticking

All without success in curing the slip.  I am now fairly reserved to the fact that the clutch is being contaminated (the engine to gearbox oil seal went about 6 years ago and I replaced it so I guess its not impossible).

Any ideas on possible causes and any bits that I should replace if I need to take the box out again :(  My arms are still recovering from the last time.

I'm afraid you will need to take the box out again to have a look.
Could be the crank rear oil seal or the gearbox input shaft seal.
What was the condition of the flywheel when you last took the box out? could also be your problem.
Good luck  :)

When you have the box out check the seal and bush where the clutch pushrod comes through the 1st motion shaft, this is a common fault with the o2o gearboxes and is often overlooked.

Thanks.  Looks like the box is coming out again the (groan)  :-\

Is there any other way of checking for contamination ?

Flywheel looked OK, i.e wasnt burnt or ridged - is that what you mean ?

Has anyone got an ETKA diagram showing all the seals that I should replace ?

Paste this link into your browser and you should see the page you need. The items are #2,3 and 4 in the top l/h. That is the 1st motion shaft seal and the clutch push rod seal and bush. You will see the gear oil on the clutch centre plate when you strip it.

Is this what I'm getting?

When I try to put the power down, it goes for a bit then the engine revs up but with out any change in speed.

Sometimes it just works fine. I'm trying to work out if I have an auto adjust cable, how can I tell this easily?

Yes, sounds like clutch slip.
Look at the gearbox end of the clutch, if there is no adjuster nut, then it is an automatic cable.

After a month of driving like a granny to avoid the clutch slip I finally found some time to get the box out.

Oil contamination is the problem (big style), there was a fair bit of the black stuff on just about everything there shouldn't be.

I reckon I 'm gonna do all three seals anyway but out of curiosity I think it is the crank oil seal.  It's hard to tell as the oil smells so much of burnt clutch I can't be sure if it is engine or gearbox.  All the tell tale signs described by the guys above were present.  I'll try and post some pics in a mo'

Thanks for the suggestions.

Al.

Centre plate in gearbox (note oil marks)

Crank oil seal

Pressure Plate, Friction Plate and flywheel.

Do you think the flywheel is ok to use ?  Also any advice on where to get the parts, and which clutch is best.  Would normally use ECP and have used Sachs clutches before from there.
