heres the dealio
« on: 07 April 2008, 09:31 »
im 18 and drive n insure a 1993 vr6, all by myself  unfortuantly im working two part-time jobs (as well as a full-time college course) to pay for it all. im now seriously, seriously doubting the amount of monies im dribbling away on just owning the car, its really limiting everything else i do cos i just cant afford it. fuel bills are hideous.

so wot i want is either a martin-luther king style inspirational speech, to keep me workin on the vr6......

orrrrrrrr, reccomend something i could buy for around 1500, and insure for less. just give me some ideas of cars you reckon wud be cool as a cucumber. (a 1.8 passat i like at the murment!)

If you like the mk3 why not choose an 8v gti or if you want to go even slower a 1.8driver or se.... for £1500 you should get something really good. If you want something bigger the passat sounds good (they look good with big rims and a bit of smoothing) and for your money a 96-97 1.8 non turbo should be a good buy?

Sell it and get a TDI Golf3, or a Golf2 GTI 8V, or even a 16V.

Won't be quite as plush as your big, fat VR6, but will provide pretty much as much driving enjoyment.

Big cars like Vr6s are designed for proper grown up people with real full-time jobs who can afford the (stupidly high) running costs.

At 33 I'm not either stupid enough, or rich enough to run a VR6.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I'm 22 & as much as I'd love a VR I know, even in full time employment, I couldn't afford to run one. It's no means cheap, but my 16v is affordable & just as much fun as a VR!

No, that's honesty.

I had a Subaru Forester Turbo for 2 months and sold it sharpish as I couldn't stomach 18-22mpg (more on principle, rather than because it reamed me dry).  I don't do a lot of miles, but there are big thrills to be had without blowing your earnings on petrol!

Despite making a nice noise the VR6 is a pretty lame engine.  A good performance motor should output 100bhp per litre.  On that basis you're missing about 100bhp.

Like the man says - go 16V (the insurance is still going to make your eyes water) - less consumption, almost as good noise.

Well done for keeping a VR6 on the road at that age. Tell us your buying budget etc and then we can point you in the right direction but my gut feeling is saying nice mk2 16v.

at 18 on a VR6 the insurance must be astronomical!

You could, like people have said, go for an 8v or 16v GTI for the money but the insurance probably won't be that much cheaper for the 16v. If you opt for the 8v because of that, then be prepared to drive something a hell of a lot slower than the VR6.

Name any european N/A production engine under 3.0 litres, ''performance'' or otherwise that produces 100bhp per litre.
