how much do you pay out of interest for your insurance?

I bought my MK3 16v at 18, my first years insurance was £2300 with TESCO's... can't imagine yours would be any cheaper if it is your own policy...

I would get a MK2 16v, insurance will cheaper due to age/insurance group car etc - they are much more fun than a VR6 and you can learn to work on it yourself which is always a good idea and you can get lovely one's for £1500.......

I would vote for a Mk2 16v too, they're so much fun. I had a Mk3 16v and then got a Mk2 16v and the Mk2 felt much faster and responsive, a better drive IMHO.
But even if the insurance is cheaper on an older Golf, you'll still spend the money you save on mods and servicing. But at least your MPG should be better. I used to get about 40mpg in both the Mk2 and Mk3 16v on motorways.

Despite making a nice noise the VR6 is a pretty lame engine.  A good performance motor should output 100bhp per litre.  On that basis you're missing about 100bhp.

Name any european N/A production engine under 3.0 litres, ''performance'' or otherwise that produces 100bhp per litre.

yea of course, the 320BHP R32 of course.......no wait thats not right is it

which lack torque low down and its only when you rev the nuts of it, you see the rewards. Fun cars but not something I would want to drive everyday.

good glad its not just me that spent a fortune to drive a performance car at an early age!!!!! I never regretted spending the money on insurance but I was earning enough to still be able to enjoy myself.... a mk2 16v is more fun than any mk3 and you will be paying less for the privilege - look in the for sale section of clubgti there is always nice, standard mk2's going on there for sensible money
