I know its with a different car, but a friend of mine with a BMW 318CI had similar issues. It occured three times within her first couple of weeks of ownership resulting in some very close shaves with vehicles coming along the road she'd just pulled out onto.

It ended up at a BMW Dealers having all its software re-booted and so far 2 weeks of trouble free motoring.

Yeah this has happened to me twice before in the GTI. As soon as I re-apply the accelerator its fine...however a bit disconcerting when your in the middle of a roundabout trying to put the power down!!!!

Took it to the dealer, but they found nothing in the fault memory. Hasn't happened in a couple of months so I guess things are cool!

Had this happen to me today on a roundabout. Was wet and took off .. got to about 25km/h and lost power .. momentarily. noticed at the same time that the ESP light flashed. Could it be due to ESP? My car seems to have the ESP ligth flash on and off .. and when it went off I lost power momentarily. Could it be trying to give you traction again but perhaps going overboard?

OK ASR then  - from the web

The GTI comes with Volkswagen's Anti-Slip Regulation system (ASR), which detects wheel slippage and applies braking force to that particular wheel. Working with an Electronic Differential Lock at speeds below 25 mph, ASR controls throttle response to maximize traction and minimize slipping for enhanced driver control in tight cornering situations.

ASR perhaps is causing this as a result of one wheel slipping?
