Sorry to bring the thread back.

Joe how was the weather when this happened? Cold or warm?

I would suggest you take the car in. This one of the symptons of a blown coil pack or a coil pack thats about to blow. Usually happens in rather cold weather. If this is the case I say get in ASAP!

There was a problem with the coil packs at one stage and most of the GTi's ended up bursting in flames at a robot...
