Saggy doors...
« on: 13 April 2004, 20:56 »
I have a mk2 driver which is - lets say - past its best. However full of the joys of spring I want to tackle the sagging doors. I seem to remember reading something in a mag years ago about mk2 doors and a fix for sagging door syndrome...any ideas?

I used to have a mk1 cabrio and that suffered with saggy doors. A local bodyshop told me a trick that they use;

Open the door. Put a jack under the end of the door (use a block of wood between the jack and door so you don't damage it). Jack the jack until you start to see the car lift. Don't jack too much, take it slowly and release the pressure in the jack and check if the door now fits the whole properly. You may have to loosen the 'pin' which the door catches on (located in the back of the door shut) so that the door closes correctly into the shut. Repeat the jacking process until the door fits.

It worked for me, good luck!

Another tip I've heard is to put a wheel bolt in the bottom of the hinge and slowly close the door.  If you do it too much put it in the top of the hinge and repeat :)

I've never tried it either, I think the only other option is to replace the hinges and pins, a complete b!tch of a job I've heard :)

I repaired mine using the "jacking" method. I ground off the weld on the hinges and re-tacked them, been no probs since  ;D
