Out with the old, in with the new !
« on: 29 March 2008, 10:17 »
Due to recent changes in my job I am now getting a new car

Its either an Audi A3 2.0 TDi 140 or MK5 Golf GTi. Now clearly the Golf is the option to go for and if I'm brutally honest with myself I think thats what I have my heart set on. The only flip side is the Audi is going to be considerably cheaper than the Golf as it would be a company car (for some reason they dont want to give me a Golf GTi as a company car ). However having done my maths right I can afford to Golf easily with my car allowance. I went through fasses of looking at BMWs and the like but soon saw the light.

Anyone driven the 140 diesel VAG engine? Any good? Im off to VW and Audi Croydon next weekend to take them both out for a spin, you never know, the Audi might surprise me. I'm just a little worried about getting stuck in this section never to return to any other parts of the forum

The 140TDi's are a great all round car and very good if you do galactic miles. but having been in a 170Tdi the 140 kind of lost its appeal.. :undecided:

Hi Alan,

I've had an Audi A3 TDI Sport DSG and a VW Golf GTTDI DSG and both were great cars. What you will find is that the A3 has a harsher ride than the VW, but a much nicer interior. I remapped both cars and they were great. The TDI manuals are a bit less appealing as the power is in the last part of the rev range and harder to access with the self-mover - cough and you miss it and it is time for the next gear.

I found that I was always lusting after a GTI when I saw one pass by and in the end the temptation simply got too great when the Edition 30 came along.

Fuel consumption isn't anything to write home about in the 140TDI's - I averaged around 42-44 overall and so when you compare it to 30-32 mpg for the GTI you are getting 10mpg more from the diesel, factor in that diesel is more expensive and the smell, mess, noise that goes with it and I don't think that they are worth it unless you do 15K+ miles a year. :nerd:

Just got back.

WOW !

I'm sold lol. The power delivery is just on a different planet to my Golf, its AWSOME ! Currently on hold sorting out insurance. Once I got that done and sorted Im going to stick down my deposit, woohoo !!! :D

Its a black 5 door, 30k. Pretty standard stuff but my budget doesn't stretch too far tbh, sooo excited ! (I never realised what a nice sound the MK5 makes when you floor it).
