Remote Central Locking-Hard or Easy??...
« on: 26 March 2008, 20:03 »
Thinking of getting remote central locking on my mk3 gti. Anyone got any advice from experiance? is it worth it?
Seen a few kits on ebay going for a resonable price.
Comments appreciated!

is that those £30 kits that you connect to your central locking in your car to give in Remote! I have one of them and csn't fit it. They give you a control box with 10 different coloured wires coming out of it and these somehow connect to the central locking in your car.

I got out the pump in the boot, and unplugged the loom. It is a 12 wire loom, so wtf!!!

the 10 wires from the kit are for - 6 for central locking, 2 for power (-ve/+ve), then 1 for lights and 1 for trunk release.

They give you sh!tty instructions which i dont understand. I even asked an auto electrician how much to fit - they said it would take a few hours so £70!!!!! so much for easy to install.

Yo,

Have you already got central locking (it's just not remote?) or have you not got central locking at all, and while you're at it you might aswell get remote?

I put remote/central locking in my mk3 1.4 and I have to say it was a hell of a lot easier than i thought it would be.

All you do is hide away the main box  (which is only about 3" x 3") out of the way in the dash somewhere, run all of the solenoids to this box and using the link below simply push the connectors together.
At the door you screw a metal strip roughly where you need the solenoid to be, attach the solenoid to this strip and angle it so that the the metal wire screws against the locking mechanism itself and once it's locked it plunges the solenoid.
This then sends a message to the main central locking box (which you've hidden away) and tells it to lock/unlock all other doors. Repeat this process for all doors/boots. The only problem I had was attaching a solenoid to the boot as it doesn't work by metal wire and it's a solid kinda unit, so  if you really want to do it you've need to drill into the little plate attached and angle the solenoid so that it triggers.

It probably took me about an hour to do both doors..

This link here, being as cheap as it is, may look abit shoddy/rubbish/cheap and nasty etc etc, but I have to say that this kit hasn't let me down, it's a very quick lock and unlock (unlike some of my friends mk3 central locking as standard) and if you read all the balls about why it's better than all the rest it's quite impressive..

I'm babbling on about if you havn't actually got central locking in the first place btw, if not then you need to get something like http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Falcon-Phaser-Remote-Control-Central-Locking-Upgrade_W0QQitemZ280210714730QQihZ018QQcategoryZ75329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
which I can't really vouch for...

Hope this helps

Mate i just wanna say thanks for the great explanation! It really helped! Yes my car has got central locking. I'm a real novice at doing stuff like this but hopefully i can use my common sense and work it out! I'll have a look at the kit you put a link to and hopefully fit one soon. Will keep you updated and give you a shout if i have any problems, if that's ok.... thanks again!

Hey that's cool, It's not often I say anything with confidence or any form of knowledge lol..

I have no idea where in the mk3 the central locking main unit or box is, but I'm pretty sure there should be two unconnected wires (+ and -) which will allow you to connect either a third party alarm or the remote upgrade to it.

Me being me (not the most logical of thinkers) I would disconnect the standard central locking you've got now completely and go for something like

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-ALARM-REMOTE-START-WITH-4-DOOR-CENTRAL-LOCKING-KIT_W0QQitemZ360035192552QQihZ023QQcategoryZ75329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

because this is the central locking, remote and the alarm all built into 1. I really can't stress how good 'Hawk' are (I sound like I'm trying to sell it lol)

but yeah I'm pretty sure most central locking units will have these 2 wires which you can then attach to another unit, then the unit will trigger the central locking to lock or unlock as when you arm/disarm the alarm

Think im gonna go for the alarm kit! but because it comes with an immobilizer too will i have to disconnnect my current standard immobilizer? is that possible? cheers, Ben

Ive ordered the kit! hopefully won't take long to come. I forgot to say its for a golf gti mk3 to them in the order notes as they said they could supply fitting instructions for different cars, did yours come with the golf ones?

hey thats kl which did u go for in the end? The hawk 1's came with general instructions because it's not really anything that integrates with what the car already has if that makes sense, whereas the upgrade obviously wires into the golfs existing components - ill have a look at my instructions when i get home tonight, i havent been home for days
