Sorting out the Brakes..
« on: 24 March 2008, 10:34 »
Up to press I have got a set of 2nd hand front calipers and a set of MK4 rear calipers. I have the conversion hoses and a 4 line kit of goodridges.

So far I'm planning on cleaning up the calipers and painting them with black hammerite.

What else can I do to ensure the calipers work to their full potential? DIY Caliper refurb How to anyone??

I'm also considering a new compensator valve - is this a worthwhile expense, I fairly certain (IIRC) it is seized, but is hasn't ever failed an MOT on this.

Was also think about new ahndbrake cables, but they haven;t snapped or owt so shold I leave til I NEED to changed, ditton for everything else?

Cheers

I'd change the hand brake cables if they are old, it's an easy job so worth it.

If you are sure it's seized then it's better to do it than not and something go wrong because of it later.

Good old wire brush and some white spirit remember to mask of any rubber boots on slider pins and such. Then go out by yourself some VHT(Very high temp) paint matt black looks nice. Laquire after wards if you want?

Then sort the lines out making sure you have clipped it properly to the strut away from moving parts.
New compensator valve worth doing when everything is out already.

You might be able to get some sort of kit that replaces the boots and slider pins worth doing. Not sure if they can be overhalled find out if the dealers or ATE from euro carparts do a kit?
If I remember they come out with a bit of wriggling and you need to make sure there is loads of grease packed in so they don't seize again. If they move freely and no splits on the boots then leave them.
