89 Valver Trip Comp Lying?
« on: 20 March 2008, 23:27 »
'ello.

The 'trip comp' is working fine on all of the settings, but it has been generally indicating mpg around and above 40mpg. The car has only just come back from a major service and MOT and the engine was polished and ported by the previous owner, but this sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? The driving has been mixed, motorway, town and giving some welly. Any other valvers getting this sort of mpg?

If this is fairly accurate then result, but I have this sense that it is overcompensating by 5-10 mpg.

Glad this has come up as mine is giving an average of 37mpg. This is from a 91 8v. Im sure my little computer is telling me fibs, although saying that it is very good on petrol!!

Thats close to what mine is saying and after working it out several times it appears to be very acuurate but 95% of the time I do drive very steady (rarely over 65 ect)

i did a couple of hundred miles trip in my 90 8v the other day, was in traffic so averaging about 50 behind lorries etc but overtaking in 5th now and again and mine was reading 43.3 which i thought high as normally its about 36-38 ish but got my little calculator out and worked out how much petrol it used when i refilled and the mileage and it was near enough bang on give or take a few decimal places! i was over the moon, although it does have a new engine and has just been sreviced lol!

Mine did that!

check for a loose vacuum pipe by the expansion tank/fuel pump, with the engine running you might be able to hear a sucking/buzzing noise around that area.

its a hard plastic thin pipe which has something to do with your MFA readings but can also play with your air/fuel mix i think?

check near the end of the inlet manfold,(gearbox side) there should be a couple of yellow looking one way valves i think they are, in a vaccum pipe, mine did exactly this and there is a little 90 degree joint coming out of the valve, which had snapped off so i just connected the little pipe to the other yellow valve and sealed the old one up, no probs now!
