« on: 18 March 2008, 17:13 »
do the mk3's (specifically a '92 vr6) have those easy install wiring plugs for head units, so i can simply plug the new one in? also, how do i get the current unit out without the little hookermajigger things?

All dubs (I'm pretty sure) had the iso block from the mid/late 80's so a mk3 should definately have one providing nobody has been in there and butchered it in the past. Getting it out without the pullers depends on the stereo really but I usually find a few very long thin electrical screwdrivers pushed down the holes/slots at the side do the job.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

I believe on Dubs though, the permanent live and ignition are the wrong way around normally.

I can't tell on mine, because it had indeed been butchered into a normal loom.  My 98 Passat DOES have this problem though.

So the connectors will fit, and the stereo will even work, but will lose settings/radio stations when you turn the ignition off unless you swap them around.  Normally swap red and yellow over.  The wiring harness that came with my alpine head unit allowed me to do this without any chopping of wires tho.
Sold the VR6... Now officially An Old Man With A Passat Estate.  At least it's a 1.8T

Mk3's are standard ISO looms unless of course they have been butchered.

There is however a ISO extension loom available for Veedubs which seems to have yellow going to red and red going to yellow on it AS WELL AS yellow to yellow and red to red.Odd configuration that initially keeps your radio LIVE all the time but i gues some dubs need it. But i didnt n a dont think most golfs do either as av never had the need to use the loom.

However, iits sumtimes common practice to cut the Blue wire on the new headunit loom whatever you buy as it could cause problems if it hasnt been cut as it leads to an opposite current which can effectively damage the headunit if not immediately, then eventually. It serves no important matter so just eliminate what you dont need neway!

See how u get on!
Why pay big bucks when you can do it yourself???
