Basic MK4 Install
« on: 15 March 2008, 14:34 »
Done a few basic installs in old Mk2's and offered to help a mate out with his Mk4 as I enjoy doing this sort of thing. Certainly no expert though so bit of advice needed...

So far he has a Alpine 4 channel amp with sub taking up 2 of channels and a decent JVC headunit powering the factory front and rears. So what would you recommend-could we use the other 2 channels to amp up the fronts and leave the headunit just to power the rears. Can the factory speakers handle being amped-or are they cack? I no it depends on the power of the amp, will have to find the model no and see.
Have seen people recommend the Fli comps-best to replace the fronts with these and power them with the amp?

Not after show stopping quality! Just a bit of an upgrade really.

Any recommendations on the best way to go?

You're spot on with your ideas.

Amp the front speakers, and use the gain control on the amp to match the front end to the rest of the system.  If the amp has adjustable filters, set it to high pass to the front at about 70-80hz - this should ensure that you don't kill them with low frequencies.  You should also hear an improvement in sound quality.
