Making ya car impractical
« on: 09 March 2008, 13:43 »
I know I might get flamed for this ( espeically as mine is lowered too ) - but thought I would get some other peoples opinions.

Coming home last night - I came to a roundabout an a Mk3 Gti came round in front of me - it looked good - lowered and big rims.

It then took off like a rat up a rain pipe. so as you do I followed suit.

Then he slammed on his brakes and slowed right down.

The reason - cos of a bump in the road where it crossed a bridge.  not a speed bump - just a dip that makes ya car squat down.

Now I have to slow right down for speed humps - and to get on my drive - but I can drive this road at the speed limit without issue. All i can think is that he has major scrubbage on the rear wheels.  :undecided: so has to slow down to 30 in a 60

So - why take off like that knowing you have to slow to a crawl in 200 yards - and secondly - why make ya car impractical like that

Discuss . . . .

PS> oh and Mr M ***ADN - coming up from Cholsey -  you were on ya mobile too werent ya -tut tut.

i know what you mean! on some bumpy roads my susp setup is useless, i could drive quicker in a standard micra.

as you come from oxford (not sure what the the road is but is a dual and then joins the m40) anyway as the road joins the the m40 southbound you go over the motorway and join but there is a dip which never really seemed that bad but once just after getting the vr decked i took this at 90 and nearly broke my neck on the roof! i sh!t you not! lol

i now do 60 round that bend!

This is why I avoid lowering my cars at all costs.  The G2 Syncro I have is at the ride height it is so that it handles.  That means sucks bumps up and will suffer vicious compressions when pushing on without bottoming or topping out.  If you want to drive fast in the UK you need supple suspension, not a 'slammed' car.  Yes, it may handle 'like a go-kart', but that means they'll be bounced off line and you'll spend way too much time belting the bumpstops.

I've been told before by people that the rough ride is 'the price of being radical'.  If back-damage is radical, count me out.

My T4 Syncro actually runs a higher ride height than standard, as it's running on Bilstein dampers and Seikel springs.  Despite running high, because the dampers are quite stiff it handles very well.  Lowering and improving handling are not really linked, people just like to make out they are, but it's more aesthetics, as far as I can make out.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

On the other hand, whats the point in building a fast car when the speed limit is at most 70mph?

Horses for courses really, all depends what your into!
