Cheers JV!!

Well now, where do I start?? At the beginning I suppose. I fell in love with dubs at an early age and bought my first (1988 Scirocco GT) way back in 1993. Loved and drove it to death. Then I got my first MK2 Gti. It was a black 3 door small bumper Digifant. Great car, but my ham fisted ownership saw to it's demise . Since then I've discovered the joys of vehicle maintenance!! After that one I didn't have a car for some years due to living abroad, but on my return I decided to relive my youth and purchased this!

Ran this for a while and tidied it up a LOT!

I then sold it to fund the purchase of a 944 S2. Sadly the wife went F@#king mental and demanded that I sell it immediately

It was advertised and purchased by a nice chap who gave me this as a part ex!!

Effectively cost me only £50!!! It only had 49k miles and was the nicest MK2 I'd ever seen!!

Then the wife demanded that we go on a day trip and this happened. See the Mitsy Warrior in the background? I didn't!

Gutted to say the least. Spent ages trying to find another one to replace it, but was ultimately dissapointed with everything I looked at. So I bought this instead...

A genuine 1987 325i Sport. My god it was good, but extremely thirsty and had a nasty habit of rusting. BADLY!

I then bought a MK3 Gti, but was really not impressed with the performance. So I sold that and decided to hunt for THE mk2 I'd been craving for years. After a long search I found this one. With my neighbour!!!!!

My neighbour works a panel beater and sprayer, so this car has recently benefited from a bare metal respray in it's original Royal Blue metalic!! Sadly that is as far as he got. The interior is well and truly goosed!!

Also the car had overheated BADLY and blew the head gasket. So he had the head skimmed and a new gasket fitted. Sadly this job was properly bodged!! When I got the car it ran like a bag of nails. Some investigating revealed that the cam timing was 5 teeth out . Using Rubjonny's excellent guide and some advice via email the poor running was quickly rectfied. Cheers John!

Then I set about sorting out the cooling system. I replaced the thermostat, well I say replaced, but when I opened her up there was no thermostat!! There were also numerous coolant leaks. Bloody bodgers!!! I also replaced the thermo fan switch as this was knackered. Probably why the thing over heated in the first place!

Upon purchase I was pleased to discover the car had just been given a full 12 months MOT. Bonus I thought. However, then I drove the car and can only assume that Mr Magoo is alive and well and working at my local testing centre. Both rear wheel bearings were well and truly shot and 3 of the wheels were buckled and sitting on perished tyres . A quick wanted add on this site produced a set of BBS RA's from Rob (cheers fella!!). One early morning trip to Rickmansworth and I was sorted.

I then replaced the steering column and top and bottom bearings. What an absolute pig of job that was!!

That pretty much brings us up to date. I didn't have a camera over the weekend as the wife had buggered off to Ireland to visit her folks. She's back now so the following work will be accompanied by lots of lovely pics....

The never ending list of things to do so far is at.

N/S rear wheel bearing.

Cambelt and tensioner. (previous owner claims it was done recently, but given the standard of the work already done I don't think I'll chance it!)

Sort out the mess that is the radio wiring.

Source and fit a new/better interior (including dashboard).

Fit 16v front engine mount

Sort the oil leak (new sump, gasket and drain plug should do it).

Replace knock sensor.

Replace temp sensor.

Replace broken dipstick shroud.

Replace camshaft and crankshaft oil seals.

Fit my Nakamichi CD400 amps and JL speakers.

A bloody good valet.

Eventually the engine will be replaced with the 2 litre agg lump from the Tornado Red MK2

Oh and replace the woefully under powered battery!

I'm attacking the wheel bearings tomorrow so will update then.

Well today the posty bought me.........

Woohoo!!! I love presents!!

Before

After

Before

After

Also got some new door handles.

before

After

And yes I'm aware they are different doors, but GSF gave me two drivers door handles. DOH!! Wish i'd spotted that before I drove 20 miles home and replaced the lock and fitted it to the door and then wondered why it didn't work!!

I then attempted to do the N/S wheel bearing. I'd already done the O/S which was easy due to the caliper bolts being loose anyway. Unfortunately the other side is not proving to be as cooperative. and my 15mm spanner is too wide to fit the inner caliper bolts

So instead I decided I'd give the car a clean to see how good it could be.

Was so pleased with the result that I installed the Nakamichi.

Currently it's wired up to a Soundstream SA80 (the good type made in the States before they went all Chav!!) and a pair of JL VR690. Yes I know 6x9's in the rear shelf isn't ideal, but I can't afford Audioscape door pods just yet. I will have some shortly and the XR650's I have will be fitted in due course with a JL 10" sub in the boot.

And the biggest news is that this evening I took the car down to my freinds garage, who put in a new cambelt and 16v front mount for me. He also set up the CO and idle and timing again as per rubjonny's guide. (I'd guessed it and got it pretty close). It's transformed the car!!! We also discovered the source of the oil leak. The sump looks like a Tetly's tea bag! Hmmmm Best get sump shopping.....................

More soon!!

Well I was rather bored this afternoon and a bit annoyed that I haven't yet been able to drive the car properly! I don't think it's wise to take it for a blast until I get the new sump on as it spews oil at an alarming rate. About 2 miles per litre!!!! So I thought I'd lay the rear wiper flat. 10 minute job that makes a big difference to the look of thye car. I'm actually rather suprised that nobody had done it already?! I mean it's a quick and common mod and the car's 18 years old and had 10 owners.......................

Anyway enough chat.

Also went to GSF and picked up a sump, gasket and drain plug..

Hoping to get these on over the weekend.

I made a start on the interior today. I've cleaned the dash and centre console handbrake lever and door cards etc. I have also just acquired a vax from a mate and will shortly be attacking the carpets and seat fabric. I'm very impressed with how it's come up so far and may not need a complete interior after all!! Anyway enough chat here's the pics!!

The before. Doesn't really show how minging it was..

After a through cleaning session

More later

Also received the relay shaft bush from MK2Mark (available here http://www.iol.ie/~locoblade/bushes.html). The difference is staggering and I highly recommend these!! No pics I'm afraid as the battery went flat in my camera. Trust me though £7.00 and 5 minutes work makes all the difference to your gear change!!

Spent a large part of the afternoon rebuilding the original speedo as the needle had fallen off!! Mileage was still clocking up, but during the rebuild it somehow lost 100,000 from its record?????? I have updated the service history accordingly!

Well I made a start on the sump today. It was loads easier than I thought it would be and was all done in under 2 hours including lots of tea and fag breaks!

the old one...

You can see the temporary "get me home" fix!!

Doesn't look too bad under there!!

And there you go.. Job well and truly jobbed!!

So I filled her up with fresh oil and it was at this point that battery decided to give up!! So I STILL haven't been able to take her for a blast. On top of that my booster pack is as flat as a pancake from not being used in about a year. I suppose I'll just have to wait for 12 hours!

Well I've finally managed to take the car out for a proper drive! The difference from when I first got the car (only just over a week ago) is amazing!! The lad I bought it off is extremely jealous! I just need to pick up and fit my new interior and she's a minter!! And all for well under a grand!!
