1st longlife service - miles/days remaining
« on: 03 March 2008, 20:08 »
Hi,  had my TDI140 longlife serviced a couple of weeks ago and thought I'd take a peek at the next service estimate.  It came up as 9200 miles or 355 days, I've only done a couple of hundred miles!  Now I'm not a happy bunny because that looks like I've been setup with Time & Distance when not requested, but certainly charged and specced on the invoice for.  I haven't spoken to the dealer yet, but can anyone confirm that I have been switched in error judging by the display.  Also, what would you advise I should push for if I have been switched?   My thoughts are that they should change the oil/filter again and reset the service schedule correctly as a minimum.  They made a mistake with the reset first time, so what's to say they didn't mess up on the oil they added!  All performed in my presence of course.
Thanks for looking.

Hi,
The invoice states:

"AVS1 - Carried out first Variable Service to the Manufact         126.00
Long Life Oil & Reset Service Regime with VAS5051"
"VAR - Volkswagen Fully Sythetic oil to manufacturer's s             47.80"

I don't know why the lines are cut short, but that's how it reads.
TIA.

I had the same thing after my first long life service...the stealer swore blind it was set to long life...didnt believe them and took it to another dealer who confirmed it was set to time and distance. They set it properly and the interval went from 9800 to 15000 miles to next service...

Thanks,  I'll give them a call in the morning and try for the complete oil/filter change and reset.  Suspect I'm going to get a load of waffle and a begrudging reset though.

As expected, they agreed to the reset at my convenience but were insistent that the oil is booked out with the job sheet so it would be extremely unlikely to have been incorrectly supplied.  I thought they just went to a great big barrel and took what was required.
I can't understand how such a simple job at a main $dealer, for which they charge a significant amount, can be messed up.  Most people would never notice the issue until the service indicator pings up in 12 months.  As it is, there'll always be a niggling doubt in my mind.
I might just do an interim oil/filter change myself after 6months with the vw507 spec. oil.
Anyone know if this would cause a prob or would the oil sensor simply adjust itself?
Thanks.

Hi,
Seat belt on (warning message will stop this procedure working)
Ignition on (engine off)
press 0.0 button on instrument panel for about 3-5 seconds.
Distance and time should pop up
trip display should revert after.
Enjoy!

just for info, for anyone getting a first service done - I had my first T&D service on my Edition 30 yesterday, 9,800miles, requested they use longlife oil, £107.35 +VAT, they quoted me £98.76 for the same service with standard oil, so didn't think that was bad

That sounds good compared to mine.  London rates are quite extortionate.

Update on my trip to VW this avo.
Went in and service reception were all nice and helpful.  They got some bloke out who went sat in the car for a minute and then came over and handed the keys to me and said it had all been switched over to LongLife.  I was very suspiscious and said don't you need to hook it up to your diagnostics gear to reset it?  Nope comes the reply. OK you're the professional (I didn't actually say that).  Went out sat in the car, did the old trick and up comes 9400 miles or 372 days.  I go back in, and after about 10mins the service reception guy comes out and I explain to him why I'm still loitering with intent to get my car sorted.  He say's no probs I'll take it down to the workshop and get it sorted out.  Another 10mins.  Hands me the keys and says it's all done.  I get in, hit the buttons, and up comes 9400 miles and 372 days.  He doesn't know the trick with the display so I show it to him and he says he'll take it back in.  10 more mins and this time it's done right.  Master Technician actually knew what he was doing apparently.
Now, I don't blame the service reception guy, he was quite young and just wasn't as clued up about his products as he should be(no excuse I know). What is more of a concern is the backroom guys in the workshop.  Maybe they should make these forums required reading for these guys/gals.
I dread taking my car in to the dealers and will go independent as soon as poss.  I know you can do that already, but the warranty period is always a time for extra care.

Any way, this will get me well passed the warranty period and i'll get it switched to time/distance then, and go to my independent guy.

Buyer beware.  Even the simplest jobs can be too much for some of our "technicians".
