rear wheel bearings

on my MOT i got an advisory for "slight play in both rear wheel bearings"

the guy said they were easy to adjust........... i assume i just need to remove the split pin and tighten up the hub nut then put a new split pin through? please correct me if im wrong

my question is....... does anyone know the correct torque figure for the rear hub nut?


ive left my haynes manual at work and wanted to do it over the weekend.

opps i forgot its a mk2 91 8v

I'm not sure there is a torque setting for them, i did mine recently and couldn't find anything. I just did mine until the wheel became stiff to turn then backed it off slightly.

same as jim i had slight play, did them up tight and then back a touch this usually sorts them out.

Make sure they're not too tight, that's how I fecked mine.

ive not done it yet........ but ill think ill just do it up tight then back off abit like y'all say but sounds abit sh!te to me. there must be a correct figure that you can tighten it to then forget about em.

No need to 'tighten' them, this will ruin them, all thats is needed is for the nut to be nipped up, no more is neccessary. I know it feels a bit wrong but if anything, a 'nip' is all thats needed. Just make sure its all nicely greased up, all the rollers within the inner and outer race are full of grease and the jobs a good'un!

what kind of grease should be used for this? i take it copper grease is a no good.

just high temp grease will do the job!u can get it from any motorfactors.
