car keys- where to get replacements?

terrible's dilemma has got me worrying a bit, as I only have one key too.

Its just a normal plastic black key fob with the button missing.

(but i think it has an immobilizer chip inside)

From a 1996 gti 16v..


Is the dealer the only place to get a spare?

If so? how much?

Not sure, but I think if you just want to replace the key, not worry about programming key to alarm etc, then get a matching key from ebay (make sure it is same as original) and go to locksmith to get the key cut.  It is a cheap way to do it but if you want to get the immobilizer programmed in the key to the car, then that is more complex.

key needs to be coded to ur car so buy a key with a chip in it

try a good key cutters that can code to your original...I paid £25 for the key and coding

But what if you have an aftermarket immobaliser, surely you don't need the key coded then..? coz i need another key aswell as i only have one.

I think the coded vw keys is a myth to be honest.

mk3 golfs have coded keys from a certain buildyear

from 1995 model year they had a factory immobiliser thing built to the ecu/ignition switch and key and unless its being removed when an alarm has being fitted (or had the o.e key glued to the ignition colum) you will need a coded key.. I still need the correct key with my toad system!

I had the same problem when the only key I had got bent out of shape. I got a blank from the dealer, got it cut locally and then back to the dealer to code it. Cost me 70 quid in all, and that was still cheaper than dealer!
