Oops i have done somthing realy stupid...
« on: 21 February 2008, 20:40 »
Yea   :embarassed:   When I took my drive shaft off to change the gearbox i hit it with a hammer to get it out the hub,  suddenly realising i wasn't using a copper hammer!  Now I cant get the centre hub nut on, its damaged the thread!

Stupid mistake i know!  Is there any way to fix this without geting a whole new outer CV joint/Driveshaft???  Please help   I Can't wait to see how she drives and every time I try to get it together somthing slows me down!

cut 4 slots in the old nut, and pray
this will give you a poor mans die set, but you still have to persuade it to thread on...

Is it off the car? try taking it around a few engineering machine shops and get them to die it, it'll take them minutes if they have a die and will cost you zip.

Time to get flamed here for suggesting this - but it works on Helicopters

See if you have damaged the lead of the thread - if so get a small file set and recreate it .

Sounds gash but does work  :embarassed:

haha i will have to take the joint off!   Do the CV joints just bang off the GTI like my 1.4?  I will take it into work on monday and see what i can do, Im sure we have a large Tap and die lying arround!  But might try the file method and file out a new thread, It wont effect the thread where the nut sits so should be fine!

Cheers!
