RNS 510 Sat Nav with Parrot install - with PICS!
« on: 19 February 2008, 15:40 »
The other thread made me get off my arse and take some pictures as promised ages ago...

For those that are interested, the bracket the Parrot is mounted on was custom made by me and my Dad, as I couldn't find one that would enable me to put it right up close to the driver.  It is screwed into the dash, so its rock solid, very user friendly.

Looks lovely that! How much did the unit set you back if you don't mind? Off ebay? Would like to change mine, and I see the older nav units (chrome button version) can be had for £450 off ebay now which ain't bad, but that 510 does look the nuts

Cheers.

It was expensive and some people will no doubt be shocked at the cost, but I look on it as an investment, as the car didn't have any sat nav when I brought it and considering the RNS 510 is now a £1800 option (not available when I brought the car), the £1000 I paid off ebay seems like good value to me!  The unit I got was brand new and 6 months later is fully working and does exactly what I wanted it to.
The only problem is the postcode entry, which I'm told is being fixed in the new firmware release 1022/2022.

parrot looks good,

but that head unit! i want one!

ive got a one of the older versions, do you think i could just buy one of those and basically just swap it out with my old one?

is the hard drive actually in the unit or will i need to store that seperately?

yes its a straight swap, bar buying two GPS leads, as they are slightly different, but all info on swaping can be found over at vwnavi.com.

as for the hard drive, yes its inside the the unit!

Yes, the hard drive is actually built into the unit allowing you to perform a straight swap of head units :)

Nice install - the RNS looks very good in the car

Price for these is coming down all the time - about Euro 900 now.

BTW - what's the small circle/indent on the upper right corner of the unit trim for ?
