Whooops! Edition 30 bumper :(
« on: 02 February 2008, 14:36 »
A couple of weeks ago I went out to the car in the morning to discover it was covered in frost.  I was running a little late - so I just scraped the front and side windows before jumping in.  From the time I stuck the face plate in my stereo and put on my seatbelt, a joiner man had nipped into the car park and randomly abandoned his van in the middle!
With no clear back window or mirrors (and it being pretty dark at 7.45am) I reversed into his van with a large *BUMP*!

I got out and looked at my bumper.  It had a hole in it the size of a £2 coin in the bottom section, and the top section was all scuffed and knackered.  I then looked at his van - which only had a cracked number plate.  Whoops!

I hung around for the guy to come back out - and explained that I'd hit his van.  He got down and studied his van - unfortunately he noticed that his bumper was cracked too.
After a quote for his Merc van, and a quote for my whole new bumper - I realised it was an insurance claim (luckily I have protected NCD) so on Monday I put my car into the bodyshop for repair.

I've been driving a courtesy 1.2 Corsa for the last week... and phoned yesterday to see if my car was ready.  The guy explained they has a problem - but I could get my car today (Saturday).

Basically - they cant manage to locate an Edition 30 bottom half of the rear bumper!  I have my car back just now with the top half fixed - but may have to wait up to a month for the bottom half.  Apparently despite the Edition 30 still being a current model, there are a lack of bumpers.  He said they there are 3 other people infront of me on the suppliers list - so obviously there are another 3 careless people waiting for a bumper!!!

So just a wee warning with all this naff weather at the moment.... clear all windows before setting off!!!!!!
Dont wreck your back bumper - as you may have to wait a while for a replacement!

....Sorry to hear of your mishap but glad it'll all get fixed.

- The actual "bumper" body panel is common to all Mk5 Golfs - It's the part which wraps around the boot lid and carries the upper area of the number plate. It's called "Cover for bumper" # 1K6 807 417 GRU.

- The next part below is called the "Spoiler" by VW (not to be confused with a roof spoiler) # 1K6 807 433 C GRU (part # for the R32, *Ed30 looks the same but??).

- The lowest part is called the "Trim for tail pipe" being different for GTI, Ed30, R32 and others.

All three parts are available for sale separately and come primed ready for paint matching.

* I'd love to know the part # for the "spoiler" - Do you know it? (I have a separate thread on this forum as to why)

RR

I just remembered that last Friday (just gone) my VW dealer rang the network and found there are "currently hundreds of R32 spoiler parts in the UK" (his words).

The R32 part looks identical to the Ed30 except that I've seen some with reflector strips.

Any help to you?

The top part is the bit that I have had fixed.

The part that goes round the exhaust was fine, so I assumed they would only need the middle section (spoiler).

Today the guy in the bodyshop told me that the spoiler and tail pipe trim were all one piece... and thats what I'm waiting for.

Sorry... I dont know any part numbers.  I'm just leaving them to it!

....They are NOT all one piece for the R32 and standard GTI! I would speak to your VW dealer's Parts Manager and then question him again.

Sorry Robin - but I'm sure  they ARE in one piece for the GTi - as I fitted a GTi lower spoiler to new my diesel and colour coded it so that the lower part (delineated by a deep groove) remained black..

Part No: 1K6 807 433 B9 B9 (this particular model includes a cut-out for removable tow bar)

....Just to make sure we aren't talking at cross purposes -

The black part in your pic (Tail pipe trim) is most definitely separate for the normal Mk5 GTI and R32. I have the different part numbers.

The red part immediately above the black part is called the "spoiler" by VW and that is separate too. I even have an exploded illustration to prove it.

When I had the bodyshop look at the car 2 weeks ago he said the tail pipe trim bit would be ok as I hadnt damaged it - and that they would re-use it.
When I saw him today, he said he was surprised to find out that the spoiler and tail pipe bit were 1 piece and that they wouldnt seperate.

....Okay - Yours is an Ed30 and so your report confirms that as only one piece.

I still maintain that for the Mk5 'normal' GTI and Mk5 R32, the parts are quite separate. This is a pic of a GTI with R32 spoiler fitted and the tail pipe trim removed:-
